I worked at a homeless charity called Flack for 7 years and most of my work there was documentary photography, film and facilitating workshops with people, largely from the homeless community. I used photography and film to empower the clients. By taking their portraits they get to see them self in a positive light, this challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone. The camera isn’t necessarily about taking a pretty photo or making a fluffy film. For me, when photographing people it’s about gaining trust making the person in front of the camera feel important, comfortable, visible and noticed. This would build their self-esteem up before filming. A member at flack who I took portraits of, said “Now I can see the invisible side of myself, that only other people can see”, hearing that was very powerful.
